Kefalonia Holidays 2012

Kefalonia Sunset

Kefalonia is part of the Greek Ionian Islands. Here you will find welcoming towns, sandy beaches, lush verdant forests, awe inspiring mountains, and cliffs that drop straight into the ocean; Kefalonia has much to offer a traveler seeking a quiet holiday, a fun nightlife, and fun in the sun.

Understand that Kefalonia has four peninsulas, each offering something different:

Fiskardo is the hotspot for jetset travelers and people touring the meditarranean in their yachts, so it can be a bit on the posh side. Here you will find the only city that went untouched by the 1953 earthquake that leveled most of the island, but sadly most of the original architecture has not remained intact. Here you will find upscale dining, shopping, and resorts that cater to almost every whim.

Lixouri is the second largest city and you can hop between it and Argostoli, the nation’s capital, by ferry. In Assos you can take the plunge down a steep rocky cliff on a path to a centuries old Venetian castle on the Northwest Peninsula. Skala is the most laid back city on the island, where most people take their beach holidays; if you’re looking for fun in the sun, you’ll find it here.

Explore

Sami beach is near Sami; it is a well preserved sandy beach with clear blue water and smooth white stones. Here you can enjoy privacy and take a swim. Remember to bring sunscreen with you no matter where you go in Kefalonia, white stones will reflect the sun and leave you burnt!

Kaminia Beach is a nice wading beach where kids and the less water adventurous can go for a swim, and is usually crowd free during weekdays. In Ithaca you can catch a glass bottomed boat and enjoy the ocean without getting wet; in Agia Efimia you can even rent a boat during the day to explore on your own, we recommend Yellow Boat.

Shopping and Dining

When in Kefalonia, there are two things you have to pick up; wild Kefalonian thyme honey and Robola wine. These local specialties are not to be missed, both are sweet and unique to the region. Try the meat pie at the Captain’s Table in Argostoli, and the Dionysos Tavern in Poros! Be sure to ask for mousakas and fried squid, each will melt in your mouth and leave behind a taste of Greece you’ll never forget. Also remember to try a real Greek Frappe, these will put Starbucks to shame.
