BarcelonaHolidays 2011

Barcelona City Skyline

When tourists think of Barcelona, thoughts of bull fighting and flamenco dancing immediately come to mind. But, Barcelona is far from the stereotypical Spain and BarcelonaHolidays 2011 are sure to be an exciting prospect. It is full of modern, cosmopolitan and urban life; and its pristine beaches do nothing but enhance its appeal as an ideal city break destination. It is an eclectic blend of old and new – from ancient, gothic architecture to modern art, Barcelona will not disappoint even the most fastidious visitor. Along with Seville and Madrid, Barcelona is a fantastic Spanish city break destination.

La Rambla

La Rambla, a tree-lined thoroughfare, is a lively place to spend a day. Packed along these streets are living statues, mimes and peddlers – selling everything from candy to jewelry. Visitors will need to spend a little extra time at the Mercat de la Boqueria, a very colorful marketplace, rich in history and local culture. La Rambla is also home to the Monument a Colom (Monument to Columbus) which sits on the harbour. The monument is a must-see for tourists and can be ascended by lift. Near the monument are the Royal Shipyards and home to a maritime museum whose exhibits date back to the 16th century.

Barri Gotic

One need only venture a few blocks north of La Rambla to stumble upon the centre of old Barcelona. Barri Gotic is a cluster of old, medieval gothic buildings which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Sprinkled throughout the web of dark streets which make up the Barri Gotic are numerous bars and quaint cafes. Visitors will need to be on foot for their stroll through the Gothic Quarter as most traffic is blocked off due to the narrow, winding streets that surround the market square in the center.

Museau Picasso

The museum that houses Picasso’s works of art is one of the most visited museums in Spain. Three stone mansions make up the compound that is the Museau Picasso. Visitors are rewarded with pieces that date back to the artist’s early years – especially his Blue Period. Picasso donated over 2,500 paintings, sketches and engravings to the museum in 1970. Two of the three mansions are used to house temporary exhibitions and traveling art galleries.

Barcelona’s Beaches

It is hard NOT to visit the beach in a coastal city where golden sands and cool, blue waters abound; Barcelona beaches do not disappoint. Bogatell beach features a stone walkway perfect for walking, skating or cycling. Nova Icaria beach is closest to the Olympic marina and is usually very crowded. It boasts several beach bars and restaurants and is only minutes from the marina. Finally, the Mar Bella is one of Barcelona’s naturist beaches – perfect for picnics, windsurfing and kayaks. It is also a nice place to take a siesta amidst swaying bamboo.

Getting Around Barcelona

While most of Barcelona is best seen on foot, public transportation is widely available. The Metro system is a quick and inexpensive way to travel long distances. Buses and taxis are also present throughout the city. Travelers will not find it difficult at all to navigate through the city.
