Dubrovnik Holidays 2012
Dubrovnik is in the south of Croatia, and is also known as the Pearl of the Adriatic Sea. Here you will find the history of the only city state to rival Venice, beaches, and a variety of activities that make Dubrovnik worth visiting. SightseeingIf you like history, Dubrovnik is packed full of it. Here you will find Roland's Column, a monument in front of the Bell Tower that is all that remains of the earlier monument of the famous knight Roland. The Sponza Palace is an excellent specimen of Gothic architecture, with a museum and archives inside. The Rector's Palace is a museum dedicated to the city's history, and Pile Gate is where you can begin your walk through the city. Be sure to see Big Onogrio's Fountain, where you can dangle your hand in the water and cool down after walking on the heat. The final thing you must do when sightseeing in Dubrovnik is a walk on the old town's city walls. Here you can walk the entire 2km length of the walls and see it from a higher view. Get OutDubrovnik has beaches like you wouldn't believe, but there are two that should stand out; Lapad Beach and Banje Beach. Lapad beach is has cool shady trees, refreshing cafes, and a pebble beach where you can enjoy the sun. Banje beach is also a pebble beach near the middle of town where you can play water polo and volleyball. If you're into something more extreme, you should check out the Cliff Jumping experience at Cafe Buza. Rent a kayak at Rental-X-Dream and go kayaking around the city wall and Lokrum Island. During the summer, you'll find many festivals; the Dubrovnik Summer festival and Libertas Film Festival to name two that you can enjoy at in August. Eat and DrinkNo matter what your tastes, you'll find something good to eat in the city. Bastion and Fresh boast affordable options for travelers who are on a budget; Arka and Dubravka have vegetarian menus and excellent wine lists. If you want to splurge a little, check out Gils Cuisine and Pop Lounge. Remember to drink like a Croatian and try some rakija; this strong drink is made from fruit but more comparable to strong liquors than to wines and the flavor can be a little overpowering for the pallet.
