MilanHolidays 2011
When we think of Milan, Italy, we immediately think of fashion and design. Milan is probably most famous for staying ahead of fashion trends – or even for starting the trends. Artists and designers are inspired by the beauty and authenticity of the city and its international culture. Visitors to this fabulous city can also revel in its splendor. Milan is the perfect city break destination for those wishing to experience a cosmopolitan atmosphere in the midst of breathtaking historical architecture. Duomo CathedralThis gothic masterpiece is the second largest catholic cathedral in the world. It features 135 spires and 3,400 statues. Construction of this massive structure began in the late 1300’s but wasn’t completed until the 1800’s. The Duomo is at the center of Milan and from the rooftop, visitors are fascinated by the views. Spectators can see the entire city all the way out to the Alps. Also, sitting atop one of the highest spires is a 3-meter tall bronze statue of the Madonna – watching over the city. Castello SforzescoHousing many of Milan’s libraries and museums is the Sforzesco Castle. Its long history dates back to the 1300’s when it was known as the Visconti Castle. Through the centuries, it was used, among many other things, as a fortress, a residence and to house military arsenals. Today, the castle’s elaborate compound consists of several buildings, including the Museum of Ancient Art. However, the civic museum (Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco) is probably the most famous since it is home to Michelangelo’s last sculpture, the Rondanini Pietá. Galleria Vittorio EmanueleThe Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is one of Milan’s architectural masterpieces. Built in the mid 1800’s, it was the first of its kind to be built using iron and glass. The structure was built in the shape of a crucifix to serve two purposes; first, to connect the squares of La Scala and Il Duomo; and second, to celebrate the union of church and state which came as a result of the nationalist revolution in 1848. For visitors to enjoy shopping, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is a definite must-see. Nightlife in MilanMilan is a city known, not only for its fashion scene, but for its exciting nightlife and entertainment. The city offers an abundance of options for visitors seeking the perfect evening entertainment. From bars and jazz clubs, to cafes and restaurants, there is something available for every taste and price point. Getting Around in MilanVisitors to Milan are fortunate to have a great public transportation system. Access to most parts of the city is available through metro rail, tram or bus. Hailing a taxi is not an easy task; as there are not as many available. However, car rentals are encouraged and parking is fairly accessible.
