Munich Holidays 2012
Munich Likes YouFollowed by Berlin and Hamburg, Munich is the third largest city in Germany. It is also the capital of the state of Bavaria. About 1.35 million people make their home in Munich. Munich’s motto is “Münich mag Dich” or translated in English, “Munich Likes You”. Clearly, it is a mutual feeling for tourists and residents of Munich alike as the city has been continually top-ranked throughout the years as one of the world’s most liveable cities. It is Germany’s second most popular tourist destination, surpassed only by Berlin. Places of InterestThere is no shortage of sites to visit in Munich. Munich is a city that is known for its “village atmosphere”. Some of Munich’s most popular tourist attractions include Neuschwanstein Castle, Lake Starnberg, Rathaus, Altes Rathaus, Isartor, Karlstor Stachus and Olympiaturm. Frauenkirche and Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan are two ‘must-visit’ churches in Munich. Other top sites in Munich include Deutsches Museum, Marienplatz and Peterkirche. Karlsplatz, Odeonsplatz and Königsplatz are also main attractions that you shouldn’t miss. Food and DrinkMunich cuisine differs somewhat from standard Bavarian cuisine in that it features more meat. This can likely be attributed to the fact that more people in the city can afford beef. However, other than that, traditional Munich fare includes the generous use of flour and Knödel dishes. Potatoes, breads, soups, sausages, salads and desserts are also typical items included in a Munich menu. For beverages, wheat beer, pale lager, shandy and Franconian wine are often served. When To GoThe best time to visit Munich would be in the summer, between the months of May and September. It is during this period that the weather is most pleasant. April-May and September-October are also good months to visit if you prefer less dense crowds. November through March will provide you with virtually no tourists; at the price of below-freezing temperatures and overcast skies. Munich NightlifeWhen it comes to nightlife, Munich does not leave much to be desired. Evening activities in Munich are extremely lively and exciting. Some of the most popular nightclubs are P1, Atomic Cafe, Klangwelt and Backstage. P1 is currently Munich’s most happening nightclub as it is favoured by many of the rich and famous. Atomic Cafe is more popular with the student crowd, often frequented by university students. If you are with a group whose tastes in music are diverse, Klangwelt might be a good choice for you as the club features several rooms with different music genres playing in the background for each. Backstage on the other hand is preferential for those who prefer live music.
