UNESCO World Heritage Site

The city of Naples in southern Italy is a historic city that has earned a UNESCO World Heritage site mention for its historic center. Complete with ample history and architecture, the city is energetic and provides a great location for exploration.

As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Naples has a long and strong history, observed mainly through the abundance of historical and architecturally sound buildings and structures. There won’t be enough time to discover the wealth of castles, churches, ruins and fountains throughout the city, particularly given there are 448 historic churches alone! Walking through the narrow, winding streets and observing the structures, piazzas and palaces around you, makes for a great adventure in itself.

What to See

The National Archaeological museum should not be missed, as it holds the world best collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. Also, visitors will enjoy the Duomo, a 13th century Gothic cathedral, as well as the Santa Chiara Church, and the Piazza del Plebiscito. Spaccanapoli is the historic center and is also the main street that splits the city of Naples in two. Complete with lots of stores, shoppers will either want to focus their efforts here or stroll along to Via San Gregoria for their consumption needs.

Eating and Drinking

Most will be familiar with the dish of choice in Naples (and throughout Italy) – pizza. As one of Italy’s most famous foods, pizza is considered an art form here. The original margarita pizza, with tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella, is the best there is around. And to find a restaurant complete with a wood-burning oven will be sure to meet your taste buds desires. Other dishes that are famous here and worth a taste include spaghetti with clams or mussels, eggplant parmesan or anything with seafood.

Nightlife in Naples

Nightlife in Naples is also growing. The most bars and cafes are found in the Piazza Bellini, Piazza San Domenico Magggiore and Piazza Santa Maria la Nova areas, being the prominent locations for youngsters to gather at night. Alternatively, a great way to spend a calm, peaceful evening is to find a terrace café situated along the coast to drink in the fresh ocean air.

Climate and When To Go

As a result of its location, Naples has a Mediterranean climate. The winters are damp and gentle, while summers can get quite hot and dry. The off-seasons of spring and fall can be the best time to visit as the weather is often more cooperative and mild during these times.
