Oslo Holidays 2012

King's Guard Oslo

Capital City of Norway

Oslo is not only Norway’s capital city; it is also the most populous city in the country. Oslo serves as the centre of Norway’s cultural, governmental, economic and scientific activities. Oslo is also an important hub for Europe’s maritime trade and maritime industries. Oslo, like many cities in Europe, is considered a global city.

It is also known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world alongside Tokyo, Zurich, Geneva, Paris and Copenhagen. Oslo is the fastest growing city in Europe; with population increasing at a rate of 1.64% yearly.

Popular Tourist Attractions

Some of Oslo’s most popular tourist attractions include Aker Brygge, Vigeland Sculpture Park, Akershus Slott, University of Oslo, Royal Palace, Botanical Gardens, Oslo Town Hall, Domkirke, Oslo Harbour, Grand Hotel, Holmenkollen and Norwegian Parliament. Some famous museums include the Armed Forces Museum, Ski Museum, Fram Museum, Historisk Museum, Maritime Museum, Applied Art Museum and Norwegian Folk Museum. Ostmarksetra and Slottsparken are also some nice parks to visit while in town.

Food and Drink in Oslo

Norwegian cuisine features significant portions of game and fish. Pastas, pizzas, meatballs and cod are also part of the menu especially in the urbanised areas, including Oslo. These minute details signify the influence of America on Western Europe. Smoked salmon is probably Norway’s most internationally recognized traditional dish. Game that is often prepared in Norwegian fare includes moose, duck, reindeer and fowl. Sweet and sour flavourings and sauces are used very generously across Norwegian fare.

When to Visit Oslo

As with most countries in Western Europe, the most ideal time to visit Oslo would be in the spring and summer months as the weather is lovely and pleasant and the days long, leaving ample time for sightseeing. Notably, it is also possible to experience up to almost 24 hours of daylight in the summer (June or July); with the sun making its appearance at midnight. Having said that, the winter brings with it some days of total darkness.

Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, there is no shortage of bars, cafes and nightclubs to take your pick from in Oslo. These typically close at around 3 a.m. and do not allow smoking indoors. However, many establishments do provide outdoor facilities with heaters to facilitate their smoking clientele. Some of the most popular nightlife haunts to visit in Oslo are The Blaa (famous among people over 25), The Underwater Pub (decor mimics that of an old ship), Cafe Con Bar (popular among younger crowds), London Pub (gay-friendly) and Oslo’s Smuget.
