SevilleHolidays 2011
The city of Seville in southern Spain is an ideal destination for a wonderful holiday. It exudes the stereotypical ideologies of Spain – from tapas and ancient sites to flamenco dancing and bull fighting, Seville will not disappoint. Santa CruzTourists flock to the barrio, or neighborhood, of Santa Cruz due to its charming atmosphere. Santa Cruz is adorned in cobble stone streets, quaint houses and countless street-side tapas bars. Along with the picturesque scenery, the Santa Cruz barrio is also situated within a centuries-old garden, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the city. Plaza de EspañaBuilt in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition World’s Fair, the Plaza de España stands today as a recognizable icon in the Seville landscape. Those on holidays must not miss the opportunity to see it. The plaza was made world-famous again in the Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia films. This huge half-circle complex of buildings is situated on Maria Luisa Park and currently serves as the home for government offices. A moat surrounds the grounds and the plaza is accessible via several elaborate bridges. Torre del OroThe Torre del Oro, or Gold Tower, in Seville, was constructed by the Moors in the 13th century as a military watchtower. It sits on the Guadalquivir River and now serves as a naval museum. Like other must-see destinations in Seville, the tower is a pleasant place to visit and affords tourists fabulous views of the river below. La GiraldaThe Cathedral of Seville, in all its gothic and baroque wonder, is one of the largest churches in the world. La Giralda is the bell tower there. Built in the year 1196, the purpose of La Giralda was not only used to call the faithful church-goers to prayer, but also as an observation tower to watch over the city of Seville. It is one of the only towers ever made without stairs inside to lead visitors to the top. Instead, a series of 35 inclined ramps sweep travelers easily to the top – from which they could marvel at the other ornate towers and gargoyles surrounding it and out to the beautiful city beyond. Getting around in SevilleBecause of its compact makeup, Seville’s central district is perfect for walking. Also, since the area is mostly flat, bicycling is another easy mode of transportation. However, the city does offer various options for public transit. City buses, taxis and trains are readily available and easily accessible. Travelers to Seville need not worry about how they will get from destination to destination as the city is extremely tourist-friendly.
