Africa is today comprised of 53 soveriegn nations and despite it's many problems, Africa looks to the future with hope. The Africa of the 21st century is bustling with industry, hopeful, and has much to offer for a holiday away from the usual European fare.

Safari

Various countries offer Safari for visitors, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, and most notably South Africa. Before taking off for Safari, keep in mind to bring a camera with you, a coat in winter, and no matter what time of year sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat that will protect your head from the sun.

Climbing

Africa's mountains do not require much technical gear to climb. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is Africa's highest peak, the most climbed mountain in Africa, and the world's tallest mountain. Mount Kenya is Kenya's tallest mountain and has climbing routes through lush scenery located near Nairobi. It's located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Cameroon in Cameroon is a highly active volcano that rises out of the ocean, carpeted in tropical forests and shrouded by mists and clouds.

Places of Interest

  • Aksum is the majestic ancient capital of Ethiopia with its stelae (territorial markers or commemorations of military victories in ancient times) and ruins of ancient palaces. Photography is allowed.
  • Dogon Country is a region in southern central part of Mali with secluded villages built right into cliffs, with it's distinct culture and friendly people.
  • Kruger National Park is the most popular park in South America, teeming with wildlife and a variety of plant life.
  • Leptis Magna are extensive ancient Roman ruins in Libya and the site of the most spectacular and unspoiled ruins in the Mediterranean, dating back to 1100 BC. Here you can see the Severan Basilica, a Roman ampitheatre, and a giant ruined marketplace with tall Roman columns.
  • Serengeti National Park is a gigantic preserve in Tanzania, and extends into Kenya as the Masai Mara National park.
  • The Valley of the Kings is the famous and ancient pyramid complex along the Nile in Egypt. Most pharoahs of the New Kingdom reside here. Remember that not all tombs are open to the public at one time, many undergo periodic restoration and renovation in cycles.
  • Victoria Falls are the majestic and steep waterfalls along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is truly one of the most amazing sites a human can hope to see, the falls are twice as tall as Niagara Falls and several times wider as well.
  • Volcanoes National Park is the place to go in Rwanda to see Mountain Gorillas, and the setting for the famous movie "Gorillas in the Mist".
