Denmark Holidays 2012

Nyhavn Port Denmark

Denmark is a small and instantly likeable country. In many ways, it is similar to it’s neighbour to the south west, Holland. The people are tall, blonde, healthy and for the most part, strikingly good looking. The Danes and the Dutch regularly top polls relating to the happiest nations in the world and they both also have a propensity for cycling and all things bike related. Seems like a great place to spend a holiday.

Copenhagen

The only major city is Copenhagen and it’s a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre, best enjoyed in the summer when pavement cafes and evening strolls are the order of the day. Copenhagen is situated on the island of Zealand, and asides from this major conurbation, the rest of the island is relatively quiet and rural. Tivoli Gardens is one of the main attractions in town. It was established in 1843 and is the most visited theme park in Scandinavia. The park is best know for it’s wooden roller coaster. Known as Rutsjebanen, it was built in 1914 and is one of the oldest rollercoasters in operation in the world today.

The main town on Jutland is Aarhus. This port town is the second city of Denmark and while not boasting any outstanding tourist attractions, has a lively cafe culture and can be a pleasant place to spend a day trip if passing through. The ARoS or Aarhus Art Museum is worth a look and is one of the largest museums in Denmark.

Legoland Denmark

Of course it was the Danes who invented Lego and for many families, a visit to this, the original Legoland (which was established in the late sixties) is a real highlight of a visit to Denmark. It is located next to the original Lego factory nearby the town of Billund in the west of Jutland and is a real treat for kids and adults alike. Millions upon millions of Lego bricks make up some of the most brilliant miniature towns and scenes you will ever see made out of toy bricks.

Of course, it’s extremely family friendly and you can even take your own lunch or snacks with you. There are a number of rides suitable for kids from small children up to teenagers and there is also a roller coaster ride. You would be advised to bring waterproofs as the majority of the displays are outdoors and the Danish weather can be extremely changeable to say the least.

Danish Weather

Due to it’s location and proximity to the North Sea, the weather in Denmark can be unreliable to say the least. If you happen to be lucky enough to enjoy a sunny spell, you would be advised to make your way to on of the many beautiful white sandy beaches on the coast.
