Estonia Holidays 2012
Estonia, once a downtrodden satellite of the former Russian empire now prides itself on being an interesting and culturally rewarding holiday destination for today’s traveller. Estonia is the smallest of the Baltic nations with a population of just under one and a half million and is an interesting mix of Nordic, Baltic and East European traditions and culture. The main attraction is the capital Tallinn, however, exploring the Estonian countryside can be equally rewarding. There are numerous unspoilt beaches dotted along the coast line and large areas of forest and wilderness where isolation is practically guaranteed if you just want to get away from it all. The Capital: TallinnTallinn’s old medieval town is a picturesque and quaint centre and is best explored on foot. In the summer, there are plenty of pavement cafes to enjoy and the town is reminiscent of other Nordic or Baltic city destinations with young people enjoying beer wine or coffee in the late summer sun. Tallinn has numerous old cobbled streets, alleys and pathways to explore with plenty of old churches and former merchant’s houses to visit and enjoy. Tallinn is truly a very charming city that’s impossible not to warm to immediately. Outside the old town centre, the rest of the city is however, not really that interesting and you will probably not even have to journey here bar a few attractions if only on a short break. Other AttractionsHaapsalu Seaside TownHaapsalu is reminiscent of neighbour Finland in name as well as nature. It is a nice little seaside town with mud baths, spas and is one of the Baltic’s best beach resorts. The town itself is a delight and is a pleasure to explore. Haapsalu is located about sixty miles north of Tallinn and is defientely woth a day trip on a nice sunny day if staying in the city. To get more of a flavour of Estonain history and culture, the Estonian Hostory Museum is worth a visit. It covers Estonain history from the nineteenth century to the present day and should be visited if for nothing else, for the fantastic location looking out over Tallinn Bay. When To GoJune to August is the best time to visit Estonia when the weather is at it’s best, although in this part fo the world, a shower is never that far away, This is also the busiest tourist time, but bear in mind that Estonia is still a relatively well kept secret for the time being so will not be thronging with tourists like other major European holiday destinations at this time of year.
