The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

Luxembourg's official name, `The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg', makes clear the country's pride in its independence, imperial heritage and rich history. Lying at the heart of Europe, it is a diverse and beautiful destination.

Temperate Climate

The country's lush and green appearance is sustained by high year-round rainfall but Luxembourg's climate is temperate, with plenty of sunshine from May to August. Thousands flock to the country in summer for its outdoor dining and festivals, while wine-lovers arrive in autumn for harvest celebrations of the Moselle villages.

Its landscape ranges from the highlands and valleys of the Ardennes to the north and the ancient M,llerthal forests in the east, through rolling farmlands, to the hilly vineyards of the Moselle Valley in the south. Flights to the country serve Luxembourg-Findel International Airport, just outside Luxembourg City. Once inside the country, Luxembourg is compact, making getting around - whether by car, train or bus - quick and easy.

Luxembourg City

Top destinations include the capital, Luxembourg City, a small but affluent city with stunning historic architecture and jaw-dropping scenery such as the Chemin de la Corniche, `Europe's most beautiful balcony'. For some weird and wonderful modern art, head to the Musee d'Art Grand-Duc Jean; or if you're seeking something more historic, wander the Old Town to appreciate the ancient walls and steeples.

Further afield, Echternach is a town out of a fairy-tale, surrounded by mysterious forestland; and for more of Luxembourg's storybook beauty, visit the Chateau de Bourscheid or the charming and picturesque Vianden. Alternatively, head to Remich to start your tour of the wineries along the Route du Vin, which winds through the Moselle Valley.

Capital of Culture 2007

With Luxembourg City appointed European Capital of Culture in 2007, Luxembourg proved that it had plenty to offer all tastes. Its cutting-edge museums, chic fashion boutiques and world-famous restaurants, all set within dramatic surroundings, mean that you won't be bored on your visit.

The cuisine of Luxembourg blends the finest of French and German cooking. Be sure to try its national dish, judd mat gaardebounen: hunks of smoked pork neck in a thick creamy sauce with broad beans and potatoes. A strong cafe culture means that you don't have to go far for a cafe or patisserie. The country's beers are a local speciality, as are its white and sparkling wines.

Dramatic and picturesque, Luxembourg is a great destination for couples, families, or anyone hoping to sample its exciting blend of Continental cultures.
