Portugal Holidays 2012
Portugal’s close proximity to the UK makes it a good option for a weekend getaway, or a longer trip. Portugal is in Southern Europe, sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. Lisbon is the showcase capital and Porto the second city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, but Portugal has much ore to offer holiday makers. From sandy warm beaches along the coast, to mountains and trees in the North, good skiing slopes in the centre, and even deserts, Portugal has much to offer the intrepid traveler. Northern PortugalHere lies the heart of Portugal, where the country started. Portuguese, Mirandese, Galacian, French, Castillian, English and many other languages are spoken here. For nightlife, visit Gaia for their world renowned Port wine, the beautiful beaches and casinos of Espinho and take the Douro River Cruise in Douro Valley. EstremaduraEstremadura is the most traditional province of Western Portugal. In Leira you can see the most famous castle in Portugal. Caldas da Rainha is a waypoint between other cities, and has a fascinating train station stocked with art pieces. When in Estremadura you MUST see Nazare. Here you can buy traditional handmade dolls, and visit many cheap restaurants who serve fresh sardines; check out the smaller ones on the backstreets for more local flavor and better deals. Visit Obidos for its Obidos Lagoon right outside of town, and the Berlengas Islands off Peniche (only open in summer, great night life!) Central PortugalCentral Portugal is the part of Portugal that stretches from the Atlantic Coast to the moutains. In Bairrada, eat a suckling pig and drink spumantes (a regional delicious wine), stay at the Bussaco Palace Hotel for a touch of elegance. In Albufeira, you’ll find a touristy area, but it still has promise for the adventurous traveler. Since the recession hit, the prices have fallen at the discotheques, so take advantage! During the day a twelfth century Moorish castle is open for admission, free of charge, called Castelo de Almoada. There are many beautiful beaches in Albufeira, some nude and some clothes only, check the local guidelines first! AlgarveIn Algarve, each some famous spicy Piri Piri Chicken, to experience the local flavor; wash it down with wine and dried fruit. In Lagos you will find winding beautiful streets filled with shops and friendly people. In Silves there is the infamous red stone castle, just remember like many places in this area that the roads are very narrow and it might be best to walk. If you are going to drive, remember the Portuguese like to drive down the middle of the road, so be prepared to pull over if you need to. AlentejoThe Alentejo region is pastoral, yet beautiful. It’s well known for it’s panoramic views, and is the warmest region in Portugal. Here you will find the Neolithic Ruins across the countryside just outside of Evora. You’ll find famous cave paintings, and can schedule tours through the tourist office in Evora. Keep in mind that the western coast of Portugal has the most beautiful pristine beach zones in this part of Europe, and in August if you’re a rock music fan, catch the Sudoeste Rock Festival.
