St Lucia Holidays 2012

St Lucia Bay Scene

Although Saint Lucia has been touted as one of the most romantic getaways among the Caribbean Islands, it is also an ideal location for rejuvenation and adventure. The vast natural landscape boasts everything from palm tree lined beaches to majestic mountains and rainforests. Travelers to the island have an opportunity to participate in an array of activities or to enjoy doing absolutely nothing.

Capital

The lively city of Castries is St. Lucia’s capital. It is the island’s largest city, commercial center and main port of call. Panoramic vistas can be seen from atop Morne Fortune (Hill of Good Luck), where the French and English battled over control of the island many years ago. The city has three tourist offices, an airport and an abundance of hotels, resorts and restaurants. From fruit markets and cafes to local art and jewelry, it is also a great city for shopping. It is also close to several beautiful beaches.

Food

The St. Lucia cuisine is as diverse as its visitors. The flavor of the island’s food is largely a combination of International and Creole; however there are also specialty restaurants such as French, Italian, Indian, and Steakhouses.

The rich, volcanic soil of St. Lucia generates an enormous supply of produce including tropical fruits and bananas, which are combined with a wide variety of fresh seafood to create enticing curries, Creole-style entrees and stews. Callaloo soup, made from leafy greens, is a national dish. As a visitor to the island, one must be sure to participate in a local fish fry. It is an economical way to experience local cuisine and culture.

Visitor Activities

Although spending lazy days soaking up the sun on one of St. Lucia’s many beaches is a favorite among all the island’s activities, there are many other things to do to pass the time while on holiday in St. Lucia. Deep sea and scuba diving are memorable experiences due to the island’s 100+ feet visibility. Watersports are also popular and include snorkeling, parasailing, boating and fishing. In addition, St. Lucia offers the ideal location in the Caribbean islands for whale and turtle watching.

The topography of the island also makes it an ideal place for natural excursions. Nature trails on St. Lucia are plentiful. Visitors have the options of roughing it on foot (easy, moderate and strenuous hiking routes available) or via all-terrain vehicle or bicycles. Horseback riding and camping trips are also available.

Climate

The climate in St. Lucia is tropical and influenced by sea winds. The rainy season is from June to September while the dry season is from February to May. The island maintains an average temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) year round.
