Swedish Holidays 2012
Renowned as one of the most advanced and prosperous countries in the Western world, Sweden is a model nation; and has plenty to offer visitors, from its Scandinavian beauty to trendy clubs and restaurants. The Swedish ClimateAs expected by its location, Sweden’s climate is cool, with warmer temperatures to be found in the south. Winter stretches from October to April and can be very harsh, with deep snowfall and heavy rain restricting travel and tourism. The country is at its best between May and September, with long daylight hours, but those seeking outdoor adventure should avoid June and July, mosquito season. Getting ThereFlights to Sweden land at one of its major airports: Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg Landvetter or the Kastrup in Copenhagen, ideal for travelling to southern Sweden. Efficient train lines connect Sweden with Denmark, Norway, Finland and Germany; or, alternatively, catch the boat. Within Sweden there is an extensive train network and well-established bus system. Stockholm travel can be very expensive, but the Stockholm Card enables you to ride on trains, buses, trams and ferries free of charge. Urban CentresIn addition to dramatic landscapes, Sweden has a contemporary energy, particularly around its urban centres. Its capital, Stockholm, is spread across several islands. The lively port city of Malmo lies to the south, and Gothenburg, famed for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, is situated to the west. Sweden’s liberal policies on immigration mean that they have become hubs of mingling cultures over the years. AttractionsA country of variation, Sweden’s attractions will suit almost every taste. Many visitors head to Åre, a vast ski resort with a highest peak of 1500 meters only accessible by snowmobile lift. For outdoor types, there is also skating, hiking, cycle rides, kayaking and fruit-picking to enjoy. When you’ve had your fill of the wilds, the country has a rich history and culture to explore. Head to the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm to see artefacts from the time of the Vikings. Sweden also offers excellent shopping: the country is famed for its beautiful glass, Systembolaget wines, innovative design and delicious fruits. Swedish FoodWhile in Sweden, be sure to sample traditional Swedish fare, which is rich and hearty. In addition to its famous meatballs, Sweden cuisine includes pickled herring, blodpudding, gravlax, a wide variety of artisan breads and caviar, as well as other freshly-caught seafood. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert: rich pastries, pies, cakes and colourful sweets are Swedish delicacies.
