Turkey Holidays 2012
Turkey is a fantastic place to visit, work and play. An EU member state, Turkey is the center of much progressive change and a gateway to an ancient thriving culture rich in historical and religious sites (it's believed that Noah's Ark crashed in the far eastern border of the country), a rich antiquities market, music, and entertainment that any one can enjoy. If you're looking for a beach or water sport holiday, Turkey has many beautiful beaches to choose from. One thing to keep in mind about Turkey is even though it's a EU member state, many citizens are observant if leniant Muslims, so keep this in mind and try to be respectful of local customs. IstanbulIstanbul is Turkey's largest city, and considered by most to be the financial and cultural center of the country. Stretching across the Bosphorus strait, Istanbul is known as the gateway between the East and the West. This gives Istanbul the advantage of being both western and eastern culturally, allowing travelers to experiece a bit of both in a single destination. Istanbul was also named as one of the three European Capitals of Culture for 2010; so you're sure to find something to see! When visiting, check out a five hour Bosphorus Tour (15 euros), eat some Turkish Delight, and shop for carpets and Carbuchon gems and jewelry in the Old City District. AnkaraAnkara is the capital of Turkey and it's second largest city right after Istanbul, located in Central Anatolia. It's a bit smaller than Istanbul, but has so much to offer travelers of all kinds. Here you will find gorgeous Byzantine architecture, where you can wonder ancient streets or enjoy a vibrant nightlife. Here many young people are fluent in English, so if you get lost someone can help you. Make sure you see the various archaeological remains of bygone empires, the Citadel and Roman Theater, and the Temple of Augustus. If shopping interest you, check out the Ankara's Castle (also known as Kale) district where you can find a wide variety of carpets and leather. If you're interested in nightlife, check out the friendly pub Papsi on Tunali street. For a younger crowd, visit Kitir and Random by Kugulu Park on Tunali Street. BodrumBodrum is the place to go in Turkey if you want to visit the beach, and would like a drier and warmer climate. Here you can go parasailing and indulge in all sorts of sport; if you're bent more towards historical sites you can check out the ruins of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassus. Be careful, as Bodrum is well known to be a playground for the rich so it can be a little on the posh side.
