Staycation UK Holidays 2012I was once of the opinion that a holiday wasn't a real holiday until I had set foot on foreign soil. It was all about the continental experience for me. That feeling of the hot air hitting you as you step off the plane. The look of the strange words and modern fonts on the airport signage as you arrived. The different clothes and attitudes of the people. However, in recent years, and particularly after a fantastic family holiday in the UK last year, I have come to realign my views on holidays in this dear green land. There is loads to do in Scotland England and Wales, and so the weather may not always be great, there are many plus points to a holiday in the UK. Staycation Suggestions
It was last year that really turned my viewpoint around. My family and I had decided to travel down to Bournemouth on England's south coast. I also had the idea of stopping of for a short city break in Liverpool to see the Beatles sites around town. Our visit to Liverpool couldn't have been better. The city was a real surprise to me and the people were more than friendly. Everyone we met was extra helpful, smiling and chatty in that inimitable Scouse fashion. Maybe it's just me but I sometimes get the impression that continentals sometimes look down their noses at us Brits abroad. In this city it was exactly the opposite. And then on to Bournemouth and Dorset for a fantastic sunny beach holiday. Bournemouth itself is really set up for sunny holidays and the apartment we stayed in was superb. Bournemouth's Victorian grandeur is still on display in the pier and Bournemouth Lower Gardens. The whole town is a delight on a balmy summer night and especially when the Festival of Lights is on. I can hardly think of anywhere better for a family holiday. It certainly surpasses anywhere I have been abroad in this respect. On holiday I found myself ruminating about just what a great holiday we were enjoying. And how we probably couldn't enjoy this type of holiday anywhere else in the world but in the UK. The people, the laid back sleepy seaside atmosphere in Bournemouth and the friendliness we experienced in Liverpool really seemed very British and civilised and unique to these isles. I think this year we will be going on another 'staycation'.
